Alpha Dice & Box Golden Mullet Fury Muscadelle Chardonnay 2009, McLaren Vale

2012-12-10 21.31.15a

AUD$22 from Cloudwine. Who would have thought Muscadelle would have seen its day in a dry table wine? Let alone hand in hand, on equal footing with Chardonnay? Well, the McLaren Vale is seeing its share of alternative varietals, and leave it to the Alpha Dice & Box gang to throw another one at us! I have no idea what inspired this, but it bloody well works! A heady aromatic profile, very open and generous, I get the Chardonnay in this, fruit-driven Australian characteristics, but there is something lingering in the foreground too. White citrus florals and latent sweetness, lime and orange spritz, some waxy petroleum notes. Quite a plump mouthfeel, plenty of lemon, twist of lime and orange flavours present, a sense of that Pink Lady apple too. Lovely persistent finish. An impressive offering worthy of hunting down a couple for the collection. Have this with a rich King Prawn risotto with a touch of 10 year old Modena balsamic vinegar, followed by dessert of caramelised figs with 80% dark chocolate. Drink now – 2014. 92-93/100.
