Sine Qua Non Atlantis Fe2O3 Syrah 2005, Central Coast, CA

If only all ‘New World’ shiraz could match the lofty heights of this offering, we wouldn’t even be having any comparisons of ‘Old’ and ‘New’ world. This is simply the ethos of Syrah. Intense black ruby colour, with an interesting aroma profile that presents as fragrances of fine ground black pepper, black peppercorns, pizza-baked olives, creme de cassis and sizzle-grilled meats. A dry, full-bodied wine with fine even tannins. 15.3% alc, this is undoubtedly a BIG wine but all that is kept in check by the truckload of raspy acidity. Flavours of ripe black cherry and black plums, there is a residual saltish minerality. This wine is still in its infancy but is coming together nicely. Drink now – 2025+. 97/100.
